In the past, Chromecast worked somewhat like Apple's AirPlay, allowing users to load up music or movies on their phone and then send that content to a Chromecast puck connected to a TV. If the term Chromecast sounds familiar to you, that's because Google has offered Chromecast streaming devices for several years. Recently, Google dove headlong into the streaming device wars, with the release of Chromecast with Google TV, a streaming media dongle with an included voice remote for under 50 bucks.
And don't forget about Shelly's review of the Apple TV, a veritable mainstay in this space with accessibility features that have been included for nearly a decade. Smart televisions such as the Insignia Smart TV, Fire Edition, reviewed by Aaron Preece, feature a TV and built-in streaming in a single package. We've covered several of these in AccessWorld, from Bill Holton's review of the Amazon Fire TV with VoiceView to Shelly Brisbin's take on Roku streaming sticks. (I didn't try any of the other ports yet on this hub but have no reason to think they won't work as well.Over the past few years, a new category of miniature but powerful streaming devices has taken the world by storm. At this point, the best solution for that problem (other than sitting closer) is probably one of the inexpensive usb cams available with a 4x or 5x digital zoom. The main limitation, as mentioned, is that sitting on my sofa across the room from the TV with the cam on top of the TV made me pretty small to the other person. (Changing cameras caused an audio issue fixed by a chromecast reboot.) Duo saw the camera and the image and sound quality on the receiving end was good. I used the power brick that came with the chromecast for the hub, plugged the chromecast into the usb-c port, and the cam into the USB-2 port and it just worked. I quickly got Duo working nicely with a pretty inexpensive hub and two different cams (one inexpensive no-name, and one Logitech). Big thanks for figuring it out first /u/BigBoyLaroux. I'm sure other people will be able to get it for cheaper. Pretty nice having the ability to place calls from my living room for less than $200 in equipment. I mention this because I excitedly ignored that on my first attempt to get it to work. NOTE: Like /u/BigBoyLaroux mentions, you need to restart the chromecast before the audio feed will work. Other than that the video looks great, the grainy footage you are greeted with on the calling screen seems to disappear on the call itself. One thing to note is my sister mentioned I sounded like I was in a tunnel with the Aukey, not sure if it is the microphone array or the acoustics of my living room. Webcam: I've had success with two, the Aukey /u/BigBoyLaroux recommended ( ) as well as my Logitech Brio ( ). Power Supply: RAVPower USB C Charger, 61W PD Charger ( ) I got it working as well using some slightly different devices (giving people options).
